Sustainability issues of Badhan Hijra Sangha

Introduction/Background:


Badhan Hijra Sangha (BHS) is a self-help group of Hijra (Transgender) Community fostered by CARE - Bangladesh. In 2001 some young, energetic and dynamic local Hijra in Dhaka city were organized and established the Badhan Hijra Sangha (BHS) as a non-political & voluntary SHG/CBO with the view to make empower the vulnerable and disadvantaged Hijra (transgender) through establishing their rights in a sustainable manner. Meanwhile BHS has been registered with the Department of Social Welfare Services, Ministry of Social Welfare of Bangladesh vide Registration number DHA- 07462 date October 2003.

The main objectives of Badhan Hijra Sangha:


  • To aware the Hijra community about general and sexual health.
  • Socio economic development of Hijra Community.
  • Establish Basic human rights, civic rights, and social rights of the Hijra Communities.
  • Networking & coordination with GO/NGO / institutions nationally and internationally.
  • Establish a network with Hijra's and in different location of the country as well as create enabling environment.
  • Social & legal rights establish and take imitative to stop physical torture and economical discrimination.

Present Strength of the organization:


Human Resource: Badhan has a group of people who possess different kind of expertise such as Dance artist, Singer, Cook, beautician and handicrafts

Social Resource: Badhan has already acquired acceptance as an organization in local /national level and

Organizational Resource:

1. Legal status: It has already got legal status & has been registered with the Department of Social Welfare Services, Ministry of Social Welfare of Bangladesh vide Registration number DHA- 07462 date October 2003.

2. Group Cohesion: Interpersonal relationship with each group member is very strong and likes to do anything untidily. They always follows their leaders (guru) command.

3. Resources: Though Badhan has a lot of resources in terms of human resources, social resource & organizational resources but it has no economical resources and only depended on donor finance/Aid. Considering the situation and make organization sustainable in future Badhan management organized a brain storming/idea generating session on sustainability issues of the organization where participants explored/find out some ideas to generate the fund which are as follows;

  1. Formation of cultural troop.
  2. Initiate canteen at office.
  3. Life skill training among SHG member e,g Block butick, Beuaty parlour etc.
  4. Form Community based organization ( CBO) and build a stronger transgender network among the country and beyand.

4. Partnership experience: Badhan Hijra Sangha (BHS) implemented HIV/AIDS & STD prevention program since July 2004 to January 2006 with the financial support of CARE-Bangladesh. It has another partnership with Unicef and HASAB . BHS has already gained experience implementation of project with the Hijra community and has a strong relationship with the Hijra community in nationally/ locally. It also maintaining close relationship, networking with others organization GO/NGO. At present, it is implementing New Funding Model project with BSWS consortium and with technical support of icddr,b.

Team building procedure:

  1. Selection of potential members.
  2. Identify individual potentialities/expertise.
  3. Create physical and practical opportunities to flourish their expertise.
  4. Engage somebody who can play mentor role to explore the expertise.
  5. Allocate time, space and logistics to meet, interact and practice.
  6. The individual member will take the initiative as an opportunity to get wider responsibility by them.

Staging events: Local and central level


  • Identify potential location and audience.
  • Communicate with the host community/organization as well as local government authority.
  • Perform show/events as and when possible.
  • Special emphasize to be given in observing national and international days, campaign, awareness raising on different social issues.
  • Staging of program will be an payment basis and potential/influential person/elite/local wealthy person would be identified for push selling of ticket or special financial support.

Strengthening the initiative:


  1. Review the initiative and identify the improving areas.
  2. Communicate and networking with the partners (GO/NGO), communities, civil society groups, local government bodies
  3. Communicate with print and electronic media for publicity and media campaign

Organizational support to be needed: Technical support/financial support required for the team from development partners/donors.

Up to a set period organization would required to provide extensive support in term of organizing, financial, communication /networking. Gradually withdraw of aforesaid support and only back slopping.
